Sitemaps are possibly one of the easiest and most effective ways to get Google to index all of your site pages. If you are 
promoting a site of any kind and do not a sitemap you are out there with one hand tied firmly behind your back.
There are several kind of Sitemaps, the main one you want to focus on is XML because this is Google’s preferred sitemap and we want the mighty Google to Love us don’t we?

Create a html version of your sitemap as well and place a link in the footer of your page template, this will create a back-link to your sitemap for every page that you have on your site. Make sense?
Put it this way, if you have a link to your sitemap from each page, then every time the Google spiders happen to make it to your page then they will have to go right through the site.
